History of Taxi Cabs

The 20th century found motor cars becoming more prevalent on city streets. As they did, some owners started hiring their cars out. These cars were electric and not gas powered initially, but people were opting to pay for a ride in a car rather than a horse and buggy at that time.
By nineteen hundred, gas powered cars were imported from France to New York City, but in spite of the cars being more available and accessible, the charge per mile still made it a luxury that most could not afford.
When people think about taxis, thoughts of New York City often come to mind, but what about a Chicago Taxi Service? Many people have heard the name Hertz associated with rental cars, but before that fame, John Hertz founded the Yellow Cab Company in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1915, the Yellow Cab Company began driving passengers through the city of Chicago and a Chicago Taxi Service that continues today would be born. John Hertz found out that the color yellow is the most visible color on the road and so he began painting the taxi cars all yellow. The fad stuck and has continued through today.
The color of the cabs was not the only change that Hertz brought about, he installed the first traffic light in Chicago and he put manual windshield wipers on the cars. The Yellow Cabs also began driving on the first tires that were filled with air. The nicer ride helped to add more customers to the cab company.
Over the years taxi service has become an important part of the urban culture. It is no longer just for the well off in the population and with safety measures like adding seat belts to the cars, having registration procedures and driving record checks to earn a medallion that shows that it is a registered taxi. Taxi cabs became a common appearance in just about every city. Some companies continue with innovations like GPS positioning and even using more green vehicles that are friendlier to the environment.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, taxis have been bringing people from one location to another. While newer vehicles and technological innovations have been added along the way, the one Chicago Taxi Service, Yellow Cab Company can be credited for propelling the taxi services to be ahead with innovations. The history of the taxi cab began over a hundred years ago and who knows, it may be around for the next hundred.
